1. Direct Contact: Touching the skin lesions or bodily fluids of an infected person.

2. Respiratory Droplets: Prolonged face-to-face contact can lead to transmission through respiratory droplets (though this is less efficient than for diseases like COVID-19).

3. Contaminated Materials: Handling clothing, bedding, or other materials contaminated with the virus from an infected person or animal.

4. Animal Bites or Scratches: Exposure to the virus can occur through bites or scratches from infected animals or through the consumption of undercooked meat from infected animals.


Monkeypox does not spread as easily as more common viral diseases like measles or influenza, but it still requires significant vigilance during outbreaks to prevent transmission.


Who is at Risk?


While anyone can contract monkeypox, certain groups are at higher risk:


People living in or traveling to endemic areas: Those who live or work in rural regions of Central and West Africa are more likely to encounter infected animals.

- Healthcare workers: Due to their proximity to infected patients, healthcare workers are at an elevated risk if proper protective measures are not followed.

- Close Contacts: Individuals who come into close contact with infected persons, particularly family members, are at risk.

- Hydration and Nutrition: Ensuring adequate fluid intake and nutrition is crucial, especially in severe cases where there is significant loss of fluids.

Since the symptoms of monkeypox are similar to smallpox, the smallpox vaccine has been shown to provide cross-protection. In fact, past vaccination campaigns against smallpox have contributed to lower rates of monkeypox infections.


Prevention of Monkeypox


Preventing monkeypox revolves around minimizing the risk of exposure to the virus, particularly in areas where the disease is endemic. Key preventive measures include:
